All,
21 AT4 3.0 Duramax
I work in the drilling industry (Mostly geothermal & mine coring now, but previously and still occasionally Oil & Gas) in extreme remote locations of the Rockies & Great Basin. Traction differentials are almost required gear in my line of work, and I was previously quite spoiled by my Duramax Colorado ZR2 with front & rear lockers.
I would love an AT4x but my understanding is the 1500s won't have a Diesel option. Not willing to let go of the economy & torque of a Diesel.
So, I have heavily researched upgrading to a front traction differential but cannot find ANYTHING aftermarket. I contacted Eaton for a possible Truetrac and got blown off. Same with Yukon gear.
Contacted Auburn Gear and they were actually receptive to me, the engineer saw the light that this is an untapped market they could make a lot of $$$ in if they jumped in. Possible options I spoke with him about were limited slip or their selectable E-locker. I told them I would be a Guinee pig if they moved forward.
Another option is a contact I made a few years ago from Ebay. The gentleman is Russian and makes Torsen differentials similar to Truetrac for Asian vehicles. I was originally in contact with him for a Toyota axle that Truetrac didn't offer a product for. This gentleman is willing to try an option if I send him an OEM carrier and end from a mating CV joint axle stub so he can copy the spline count etc..
3rd option is to find an AT4x front locker from dealer or wrecking yard and transplant. I even called AEV about an upfitting kit and they said they would "look into it"... I cannot find any info online of someone tackling that project.
Which leads me to my next trouble. Both Auburn gear & Ivan the Ruskie have asked me for axle model information, and I can't find anything. I have heard the 2019+ referenced as "Gen 4" or "new style" axle and are possibly 8.25'' ring gear but cannot reference any literature on them. Same with the 9.25'' in the HDs which if I tackled the 1500 on this project I would probably tackle the HD line as well.
I am not afraid of projects and would probably work with Ken @ Gearinstalls.com. Here is a link to a previous project we worked on together.
Any info is appreciated.
